St. Martin’s Weekend · Prlekija, Slovenia

St. Martin’s Day 2026 in Prlekija: Events, Young Wine, and Where to Stay

A November morning in the Jerusalem Hills smells of fog, smoke from the cellars, and sweet, still-fermenting must. The wine presses have fallen silent, the vines are golden and brown, and in the cellars, preparations are underway for the winegrowers’ biggest festival. St. Martin’s Day 2026 will fall on Wednesday, November 11, so the St. Martin’s weekends of November 7–8 and November 14–15 are the best times for a longer visit.

Martinovanje 2026 at a Glance

St. Martin’s Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, when, according to folk tradition, the must “transforms” into young wine. Since the holiday falls in the middle of the week, the celebrations in Prlekija and Štajerska stretch over two weekends—ideal even for those who can only take two days off.

In the Jerusalem Hills, wine and wellness come together at this time of year: in the cellars, the must-tasting season is getting underway; in the restaurant, St. Martin’s Day geese with mlinci are being roasted; and at the spa, a sauna and a massage with a view of the vineyards await you.

What Is St. Martin’s Day and the Cider Blessing Ceremony?

St. Martin’s Day is the feast day of St. Martin, the bishop of Tours, celebrated on November 11. In Slovenian wine-growing regions, this is the day when the fall work in the vineyard and the cellar comes to an end: the must has fermented, the barrels are full, and the winegrower can toast the harvest. That is why St. Martin’s Day is often called the “Styrian New Year” in many places.

The central ceremony is the christening of the must. In a playful yet solemn ceremony, “St. Martin’s Bishop,” along with the godfather and witnesses, names the must and declares it wine. At the same time, the christening certificate is read aloud, the vintage is blessed, and, of course, the first toast is raised. In Prlekija, must christenings are part of town St. Martin’s Day celebrations, village festivals, and family cellar gatherings.

This fall, they also take down the last klopotce—wooden wind chimes that have spent the entire summer chasing birds away from the grapes with their clattering.

St. Martin’s Goose, Mlinci, and Young Wine

According to legend, Martin, who had hidden himself so that he would not be elected bishop, was given away by cackling geese. That is why the St. Martin’s goose remains the queen of the festive table to this day: roasted until the skin is crispy, served with mlinci soaked in the rich juices from the roast and stewed red cabbage. In Prlekija, it’s often served with kisla župa—a hearty soup cooked in large cauldrons during St. Martin’s Day celebrations.

Young wine is this year’s vintage—fresh, fruity, and lively—intended to be enjoyed in the first few months. It is officially “christened” on St. Martin’s Day. In the Jerusalem Hills, mature wines of characteristic varieties are also served alongside it: Šipon (Furmint), Welschriesling and Riesling, Sauvignon, and Pinot Gris.

Which St. Martin’s Day weekend to choose

Since St. Martin’s Day 2026 falls on a Wednesday, there are two options for a longer visit:

The first St. Martin’s weekend, November 7–8, 2026 —for those who want to celebrate before St. Martin’s Day itself. On Saturday, November 7, the St. Martin’s Day festivities take place in Maribor on Koroška Street, while the hills are still ablaze with the last colors of autumn. Perfect for those who are taking the whole weekend off.

The second St. Martin’s weekend, November 14–15, 2026 —when the must has already been officially christened and young wine is on every table. Saturday, November 14, marks the last day of the St. Martin’s celebrations in Ptuj. The festivities are a bit more “serious,” and the wine has stabilized somewhat.

Midweek, November 10–12 – for those with flexible schedules: arrive the day before the holiday, November 11. 11. Attend the St. Martin’s Day celebrations in Ptuj or Maribor (perhaps even with organized transportation), followed by a relaxing spa day the next day and a stress-free trip home.

Afternoon: Visit a St. Martin’s Day celebration in Ptuj or Maribor (depending on the weekend); transportation can be arranged by the hotel.

Alternative: A trip to Ormož Castle and a pumpkin seed oil mill to pick up some pumpkin seed oil to take home.

Why a St. Martin’s Day celebration with an overnight stay?

Martinovanje is a festival of wine tasting: a glass of must in the town square, two samples in the cellar, and young wine with dinner. The roads through the vineyards are narrow, winding, and often foggy in November, so driving after a tasting is risky and unnecessary.

Even a single drink can exceed the legal limit, and there is a zero-tolerance policy for novice drivers.

A St. Martin’s Day celebration with an overnight stay means that after dinner, you simply head to your room with a view of the vineyards, and in the morning, breakfast awaits you instead of a drive through the fog.

For groups of friends, Sibon is both a starting point and a place to return to: you can take a taxi or organized transportation to Ptuj, Ormož, or Ljutomer, and then return to the hotel feeling relaxed.

You can choose from the following room types: Classic, Comfort, Deluxe, and Suite—all with a view of the vineyards and access to the spa.
