Prlekija has a very rich and versatile local cuisine that was designed by dishes prepared only from locally grown ingredients.
Everyday food was simple, festive menus were versatile and rich. Traditional meals, that could be called feasts, were prepared with every big farm chore, holiday and on special occasions.
Prlekija culinary is one of the important tourist attractions of our places. Restaurants and tourist farms offer these dishes as local specialities.
One of the culinary specialities is “Prleška tünka”. This is the best parts of pork with no bones, no skin and superficial fats. The meat is desalted, then cooked or sauted and smoked. Smoked meat is then put in tünka, traditionally, these containers were made out of wood, and the first layer was a layer of minced lard, then meat, then again a layer of lard, etc. While the meat is ripping in the minced lard it gains a special taste that is appreciated by the gastronomy connoisseurs and lovers of good food.
